Capital Assets and You!

Stanford Medical School circa 2000

Capital Assets are part of the resources that help educate our Medical Students and turn our scientific hypotheses into reality. Our funding agencies require us to track capital assets from their purchase to their "retirement". The School of Medicine receives millions of dollars in Indirect Cost Recovery from the Federal Government for our Capital Assets. The only requirements are that the assests be entered into the Capital Asset Management System, tagged with a Stanford University bar code property tag and, that their location and use status be updated.

Our goal is to assist all School of Medicine Department Property Administrators with this responsibility. Our involvement includes participating in the Property Advisory Group quarterly meetings where suggestions and comments about property systems and processes are brought to the University's Property Mangement Organization. We also provide planning and support services to all SoM DPAs for the Biennial Asset Inventory and advocate the types of data and reports that SoM DPAs want and need to complete this work.

In addition to managing Capital Assets, the Reuse, Surplus Sales and Salvage operations are also managed by the Property Management Organization. There are many items available to all Stanford Departments at reasonable prices, and sometimes free of charge, at the Reuse site. Items at Surplus Sales are available to staff and non- Stanford community members and organizations. Salvage items are picked up and disposed of through a contract with an outside firm.
